School Counsellor - Part Time

Carinya Christian School Tamworth is searching for a Part Time School Counsellor.

Commencing Term 1 2018.

Applications are now being received from registered psychologists or experienced counsellors to work with students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Applicants require excellent interpersonal and communications skills, and a demonstrated ability to relate with young children and adolescents.

Essential Selection Criteria

- A qualified Psychologist or three year training in Counselling with a minimum Graduate Certificate.

- Registered as a Psychologist or Registration with an accredited Counselling Association. 

- Eligible to work in child related employment.

- Committed Christian of reformed evangelical persuasion and an active participant in local church.

- Demonstrated ability of interpersonal and communication skills.

The Position

The Counsellor will be required to work during School Term Weeks and Staff Development Weeks only (generally 39 weeks a year). The number of days per week is to be negotiated with the successful applicant, the expectation being less than 5 days.

The core responsibilities of the position are to:

- Assist in the ‘triage’ process for students with mental health issues by providing support and short term interventions.

- Create and monitor individual mental health plans for students covering various mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, dealing with grief and abuse.

- Liaise with parents and staff regarding issues with student wellbeing.

- Guide families in referrals to external agencies or services as required.

- Work closely with executive staff to create, implement and communicate strategies for proactive mental health and wellbeing in the Carinya Christian School Community.

- Refer students to appropriate government authorities in conjunction with the Principal regarding mandatory reporting.

- Work closely with executive staff to create a safe and supportive environment for students at risk.

The School

Carinya Tamworth is a K to 12 co-educational school. The school has a strong academic profile and a broad sporting and extra curricular program.

Over 400 families form part of the school community and more than 630 students are currently enrolled at the Tamworth school.

A strong focus on professional development and teaching standards exists within the school and staff are encouraged to seek progression against the National Teaching Standards.


The School Counsellor will be classified in accordance with the Independent Schools NSW (Support and Operational Staff) Multi-Enterprise Agreement. Wellbeing Services Staff are classified by the agreement in accordance with their qualification and experience and paid accordingly.

Professional development is an important priority of the school and two non-teaching weeks are set aside each year during student vacation for all staff to collectively participate in Curriculum and Professional development. Carinya Term Dates do not match NSW Public Schools and can be reviewed via the school website.
